Is it possible to rent a car in Thailand without a driving license

Thailand is one of the most popular travel destinations in Southeast Asia. Many tourists want to explore Phuket and Koh Samui, as well as the mainland, independently. Renting a car or scooter is the most convenient option, as public transportation is poor, taxis are very expensive, and freedom of movement is limited. However, an important question arises: is it possible to rent a car in Phuket or Koh Samui in Thailand without a driver license?

A driver license is one of the required documents when hire a car. It is required, along with a passport, to sign the contract: only upon presentation of these two documents can the rental company confirm the renter's identity and legal right to drive a vehicle of the appropriate category. Also, equally important requirements for car rental in Phuket are the driver's driving experience and age. Rental companies typically require at least three years of driving experience and at least 21 years of age. This period is confirmed by the date indicated on the driver license; even if it is replaced, the information is transferred to the new document.

Can i hire a car without a driving license in Thailand?

In most cases, no. The exception is a rental car with a driver: in this case, the client only needs an ID. This option is convenient for corporate events or corporate trips and relieves the client of the responsibility of monitoring the car's technical condition, compliance with traffic regulations, and fuel levels. The cost of this service is generally higher, as it includes the driver's daily workday, so it's best to book the desired model in advance to ensure the car is available on the desired day. Driving any vehicle without a DL is a serious traffic violation. If stopped by the police, responsibility and fines will fall on the driver. Attempting to rent a car and drive without a license usually results in significant financial risks and criminal liability.

Official requirements:

According to Thai law, driving a car is only permitted with a valid driver license. This could be issued in Thailand. It can be obtained even with a tourist visa. It's important to have the necessary time, as the process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the workload of the transportation office. If you're staying overnight or your vacation lasts more than a month, this option is worth considering, especially if you plan to return to Thailand later. It valid for two years, renewable for another two years, and so on, ad infinitum.

Or an international driving permit, which the future renter must obtain in his or her home country before traveling abroad.

However, in practice, most rental companies make exceptions and rent out transport without an IDP, only with a national driver permit. In this case, driving laws are not violated entirely and car insurance will be valid, but traffic police have the right to fine you. In Phuket and Koh Samui, the fine for not having an IDP is 1,000-2,000 baht. Payment is made on the spot and is valid for the entire day.

If you don't have a driver license at all-either national or international-driving is prohibited. In the event of an accident in Thailand the insurance company will not recognize the policy unless the driver has the appropriate document. Liability for any damage (including to the health of others) falls entirely on the renter. This is why it's so important to understand that if a rental company agrees to rent a car to someone without a driver document they're unscrupulous, and dealing with them could result in financial losses. In Phuket, and indeed throughout the country, you're unlikely to find a single company willing to risk their property, or even if you do, the deposit will be exorbitant. Renting a motorbike without a driver license, however, is standard practice at popular resorts. Riding a motorbike also requires an IDP, but it's a category A license, which tourists often don't have. The client leaves the passport as deposit, which is a major pitfall, as in the event of a dispute, you'll agree to anything to get it back. Motorbikes are typically not covered by comprehensive insurance, and the renter is fully liable for any accidents. The rental agreement typically specifies the amount of damage the client must pay in the event of any vehicle damage, but it's important to remember that the renter is also responsible for the other parties involved in the accident: if they are injured, the at-fault party will also be responsible for their medical expenses. You can minimize your risks by choosing a rental company with the most reasonable terms.

If you don't have a license, there are safe and convenient options:

Hire a car with a driver is often cheaper and more convenient than taking a taxi for day trips.

Taxi-meters or app-based taxis. Grab, In-drive, and Bolt are available in Thailand. They are cheaper.

Packaged tours with transfers. These include sightseeing trips without the hassle of travel and itinerary. Convenient for long-distance travel.

Rent car in Thailand, in Phuket and Koh Samui, without a driver license is only a formality and is at your own risk if you find companies that don't check your documents. However, driving without one is illegal and extremely risky: neither insurance nor the police will protect you, and the fines and penalties can be very serious. Therefore, if you want to explore the country by car, it's best to obtain an IDP in advance. It's easy and quick, and it will save you a lot of trouble.
