Main information

Car rental in Thailand can be a great way to explore the country, especially if you plan to visit remote areas or islands that are difficult to reach by public transport.

To rent a car, you need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Some companies may accept your country’s national driver’s license, but having an IDP is strongly recommended to avoid possible problems with police and insurance companies.

Driver age is also important. Most companies require at least 21 years old, and sometimes 23. In some cases, additional fees may apply for drivers under 25.

You can rent a car in the Kingdom both from major international firms (such as Avis, Hertz, Budget) and from local agencies. The former offer a wider choice of vehicles and expanded options (for example, pick up in one city and return in another), but their services are usually more expensive and payment is often only by credit card. Local private businesses can offer better prices and payment methods, but you should be careful when choosing, and review the contract and other customers’ reviews carefully.

Standard rental usually includes maximum insurance, but with a deductible: the amount you must pay in case of an accident that is your fault (often equal to the security deposit). Check with the rental provider about the possibility of purchasing additional coverage.

Road traffic in Thailand is left-hand, which may require some getting used to. Drivers are less disciplined compared to Europe or North America, so it is important to be especially attentive. Roads often have motorcyclists, and there may be unexpected obstacles such as animals or pedestrians. In rural areas, roads can be of lower quality, with many potholes and no lane markings.

Useful tips

Vehicle inspection: Before signing the contract, be sure to inspect the vehicle for damage and note it. Also take photos and videos of the vehicle from all sides.

Police: There may be police checkpoints on the roads, especially in tourist areas. Always carry the car documents and your driver’s license.

Pay attention to the rules: Obey speed limits and other traffic regulations to avoid fines.

Car rental in Thailand is a convenient and often necessary way to travel, especially if you want to see more than standard tourist routes offer. However, it is important to approach the rental process carefully and cautiously so that your trip is safe and pleasant.
